DANCER
Echoing Muybridge, Marey, and Edgerton, all renowned for their pioneering work and studies in high-speed motion photography, Revell's visual language blurs the lines between still photography and moving images. By treating a film camera like a stroboscope, the work captures two principal dancers of the Royal Opera House in mid-leap – a document of pure artistic beauty.
Giles Revell
Giles Revell (born 1965) creates photographs that question the boundaries between science and art, metaphor and reality. His ideas and forensic eye for detail are shaped by his training as a geoscientist, and the graphic beauty of his work reveals his insatiable curiosity to transform the everyday. Revell is a master of light and a passionate collector of natural materials, which is evident throughout his oeuvre.
In his search for an alternative perspective that goes beyond the aesthetics of traditional photography, he often uses other technologies developed for scientific research in his methods and regularly collaborates with universities and the Natural History Museum.
Revell worked for 25 years as a highly successful international advertising photographer before deciding in 2020 to focus exclusively on his own projects. He has won numerous photography awards and high-profile commissions.
His works are published and exhibited internationally and are represented in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Royal Opera House.
